I wonder if hydraulic conductivity patterns are reversed in warm-winter climates (i.e. CA), where fall planting takes advantage of winter rains.

You don’t have to convince us Arborists, we see the big transplants struggling & dying in the landscape. We need to convince customers who believe in ‘bigger is better, trees grow so slowly I’ll never see them grow’. Also convince homeowners, designers & HOAs that trees CANNOT create fences!
Mary A. Bauer
01:02:44
Even below ground, most suburban soils are so microorganism-poor that wraps don’t degrade before tree dies.

Any studies or plans for study of grow bags and difficult to plant species - you mentioned there is "air pruning" with bags; there is root pruning when the bags are ripped off at planting - which doesn't happen with other types of root stock.

I convince customers/homeowners to go smaller in transplants by pointing out the different length of guarantees based on size- big ones do NOT have a guarantee because so many die! You pays your money and you takes your chances, as the saying goes. Mary A. Bauer

01:19:29
You can also transplant evergreens in late summer, after their new growth hardens off. In WI it's best not to transplant any later than early Oct., to allow for enough roots to grow and able to take up water over the winter.
Mary A. Bauer
01:19:38
In MI, we re-forest with 6” -9” tall, bareroot evergreen seedlings in Spring. These babies have a high mortality unless they get proper aftercare, but can do well. Mary A Bauer

In the west we deal a lot with drip systems of which I am not a fan. Only a small area of soil is watered compared to a regular sprinkler system which waters the surrounding area allowing for much better root growthj.
