Up north here, the soil compaction parameter gets even more complicated by the negative impact of road salt. Many tree species do not tolerate road salt.

I live & work 8 miles from the UI campus, we see that soil type & related overwatering problems often here in the Palouse region.
Naomi Zurcher
01:13:41
How are you dealing with the fact that you still have to compact the substrate when you install permeable or porous paving. We use structural soil for the substrate. Have you done any work with this with other solutions?
Naomi Zurcher

How are you addressing the high energy usage to create biochar as well as the pH issues?

They have been dewatering our street down 35' in order to install a gravity fed sewer. They miscalculated the water holding capacity of the soil so it has taken much longer to dewater. The standing surface water has been dried up for months and they are not near finishing yet. How long can the trees go in our protected woodlands/wetlands with out permanent damage from the created drought?
Mark Bays
01:25:40
I think it's somewhat frustrating to see fertilizer advertised as plant food
Brian Jorgenson
01:27:04
I agree Mark, I usually equate fertilizer with vitamins for my clients. You may or may not need them.
Russell Carlson
01:28:55
These exercises assume nitrogen is in short supply, but ignores the other nutrients. This feeds the myth that nitrogen solves all problems.
